Compote is a traditional drink in Eastern Europe, especially in Russia. It was very popular in Soviet times and was often served as a dessert.

  • 1 kg of cherries
  • 2 l of water
  • 120 g of sugar
  • Grated lemon zest

Description

The word "compote" has its origin in the French language and means first of all "fruit puree". In Europe, compote was already cooked in the 18th century - in France. Until the 18th century, a drink called "Usvar" or "Vsvar" was prepared in Russia. It was made from dried fruit and dried berries and was considered a festive dish served on Christmas Eve.

Today, compote is not only prepared from dried fruits such as plums, raisins or dried apricots in Russia. Compote can be made from fresh fruits and berries too. Here's a simple recipe for a delicious, refreshing cherry compote.

1. Place cherries into a pot.

2. Add water.

3. Add lemon zest.

4. Add sugar, stir. Bring to a boil and cook for 15 minutes.

5. Allow to cool and serve.
